promoting public transport

Public transport is a great choice for getting quickly and safely to school from longer distances. Tyne & Wear hosts an extensive and efficient public transport network, and with a ‘U-16’ pass from Nexus anyone under the age of 16 will pay only 50p per journey or £1 for unlimited daily travel by bus or Metro!

Additionally, dedicated ‘scholars’ services run to many schools in Tyne and Wear. These are listed here [link to Nexus scholars list].

Ideas for promoting public transport:

  • Newsletters – to inform parents of the cheap tickets available to their children, or to let them know the range of services operating nearby.
  • Maps – to show the nearest bus stops to the school, which buses serve them, and where they go.
  • Routes to school – ensure that the routes between the bus stops are safe and attractive – if not, work with your local authority to remedy this.
  • Behavior – rowdy behavior can put off other pupils (and adults!), so ensure that pupils know how to behave on public transport.
